First off, I am so glad I've found this board. There is such a wealth of information here, and it's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm sure my story will sound like others.. but well, this is the place to start, I guess. Sorry if it's long...

When I was a baby, I had urinary reflux.. (basically, the urine in the bladder would flow back up into the kidneys. There was also some deformation in the ureter/bladder connection, but that fixed itself over time). Since then, I seem to have been prone to bladder and kidney infections. I just thought that it was something I had to deal with. About once a year, I'd get a UTI. If I started dating someone, I'd get one the instant we slept together - it's just something I accepted.

However, when B and I first got together two years ago, I had several infections, almost back to back. My doctor told me that my cultures were at first positive, but then they started coming back negative. I continued to have troubles, including a severe 'UTI' while on vacation at B's hometown. I went to the local hospital and they did tests, sending the cultures to my family doc. By the time I got home, my doc had the results.. cultures were still negative, so she decided it was time to send me to a urologist.

That was over a year ago. He did ultrasound, urodynamics, and a couple of other tests. He did a hydrodistention and cystoscopy, which showed glomulerations. Official diagnosis, Interstitial Cystitis. Thankfully, the hydrodistention kept my symptoms at bay - I didn't have a flare for three months. Once I had another, the doc put me on low dose Macrobid for 6 months...thinking that if he prevented an infection, he'd possibly prevent a flare. It seemed to work.. in fact, I didn't have any problems for 9 months. I was thinking .. phew! Interstitial Cystitis isn't as bad as I thought it would be!

But over the last two and a half months, it has reared its ugly head. I've had flares that last up to two weeks. Constant pressure, urgency, frequency, and major urethral pain. I work a desk job, and can't seem to sit still because of the pain. Sex is down to once a week at best (and I seem to be lucky to get that).. and my libido seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Thankfully, B is incredible - he is very understanding and just rolls with the punches.

I'm going back to a different Uro next Friday (my previous one was just too busy, couldn't even get in to see him for four months!).. and I am trying to educate myself as best as I can before the appointment. Currently, I am on minimal medication - UniDet (antispasmodic/anticholinergic) and pyridium. It's not working all that well.

So.. that's where I am up til now. I know, I know.. you're not doctors.. but I hope that you can give me some insight as to what might work in my case. The Unidet seems to be working (mostly) for the frequency/urgency.. but I don't have anything medication-wise that is effective for the urethral pain. I have done all I can do on my end (no scented laundry soap, no tight pants, etc), but it's just not helping. If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great!

Thanks :)

:welcome: to the boards!

For me urethral pain is helped by antacid like things and cold...sometimes altnerating with heat....but I will give you a link to more ideas and a place to look on ICA for that question and others.
I am very happy you found us. If you have to have IC we are the group to have it with...:grouphug:

:hi: and :welcome: to the icn family a good place to start is www.ic-network.com/handbook.
it has a lot of great information there about treatments the IC diet if your not doing that it could help you a lot.
try mixing one tsp of baking soda to an eight oz glass of water try taking a tums try some prelief before each meal. the ic diet will give a good guide to what to stay away from until you figure out what is causing this nasty flare.
heating pad or an ice pack may also help you.
is there any chances you have another u.t.i.? can you see your family doctor to check to see if you have an infection if so they can get you started on some medicine to cure that infection.
sending you many hugs and prayers for a better day.
Rhonda

Wow, such quick responses - thanks!

I have done the exclusion diet, and discovered I have several triggers. I try to always remember Tums.. (I admit, I'm not always the best at that). Unfortunately, we don't have Prelief in Canada (or at least I can't find it where I live). I have been to the doctor, it's not another infection.

So I take it there are no medications for the urethral pain?

can you order prelief over the internet? There use to be free samples offer from prelief but not sure if the offer is still good or not I found that offer on the ICA.

do you have AZO where you live? that can help bladder spasm and urethral pain.
if not maybe call your doctor and ask for them to call you something in.
Hope you feel better soon.

First of all, I'd like to say :welcome: to the IC Network family. Others have given you some good suggestions. I have one more to offer --- if you had a year of feeling good following a hydrodistention, you might discuss with your urologist the possibility of having the procedure repeated. I am one of those who benefit significantly from hydrodistention --- and I read that this helps something like 50% of IC patients.

I hope you feel better very soon,
Donna

Hi! I wanted to get my welcome in here too, I just found this site a few weeks ago and I too have learned so many self-help ideas, it's just been amazing. My first complaint I had was just urethral pain, it felt like I was peeing broken glass, absolutely horrible. It would also feel like my urethra was spasming/clenching, enough to bring tears to my eyes. So my doc put me on Ditropan (antispasmodic) and that worked really well, until the UTI that kicked everything else into gear, ugh. For me, when my urethra starts to act up, I use everything from the baking soda in water (for me it quiets the burning sensation), to heat or cold (for the spasm-y feeling), whatever will work at the time. I have had really good luck with cold in the spasm-y dept, on a recent car trip I had my sweetie buy me a thing of bottled water and held/half sat on that and it was such relief! I was really comfortable...and I had been really miserable to the point I was ready to ask him to stop for the night, cause I was going nuts (my AZO wasn't helping at that point either). There are just my little suggestions, I am continuing to learn everyday what seems to work for me, and I know you will too. Sometimes I just amaze myself at what I can do for myself, no doc reuired!!! Welcome once again!!

Warm Fuzzies to ya!
Tracey :)

We don't have AZO either, but I suspect my combination of Pyridium and Unidet (Detrol LA in the states) is similar. I find that helps, but it doesn't 100% get rid of the urethral pain.

On a side note, I visited a local vitamin shop this weekend, explained the symptoms to the woman there, and she suggested two supplements that have anti-inflammatory effects: calcium citrate with magnesium and vitamin D (a 1:1 ratio, 250 mg each, 2-3 tabs daily).. and extra omega 3's, in the form of Salmon oil (1000mg each, 2 tabs daily). I haven't gone into remission, because I am still having bladder spasms (which I can control with the Unidet).. but since starting the supplements, my urethral pain has gone completely away. Happy, happy, happy! Hope this info can help others......

Wow, that's impressive! That's great. In addition, if it comes back, you may want to try the heat/cold thing suggested by others. Also, there's a med called Pyridium Plus that has a few extra ingredients in it that the regular stuff doesn't... ask your doc about that, since I tend to find it works a little better than the plain Pyridium. :)
