Hi, I have a question and hope someone can help me.

My doctor just called and said my urinalysis came back with "mixed gram positive organisms" and wants to put me on Keflex.

Is this a "real" bladder infection??????????? He said there was blood in my urine too, and I think that was from the cysto I had last Friday, I've hurt worse ever since and it's VERY hard to empty.

DO you think I have a bladder infection? Or is he just treating me because of what the results said?

I have had my urine results come back with this before and every time the antibiotic just made things worse. What should I do? I do feel worse this time, so I do think the cysto gave me some sort of infection because I wasn't given an antibiotic before or after it.

If anyone could advise I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

Dee

I just finished a bout of keflex. You DO have an infection. I am a surgical tech., A cysto is a clean, not sterile, procedure. Everything they use on you is sterile! That does not mean that you couldn't get an infection from something that was passed through, because it is being passed through a clean area but not a sterile area. I hope this helps. Take the Keflex, I was feeling better after a couple of hours. Better but still in pain. With every dose you will feel so much better.

Sounds to me like you have a mix of bacteria in you....and this does happen sometimes. I certainly hope you feel better soon. I hope the anti helps you....:grouphug:

I did keflex for another kind of infection a few months ago. The keflex did not bother my ic at all.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I better try it then....won't know until I do. :) I guess infections won't go away on their own, darn it!

I get an infection after every internal procedure. I have noted that other IC'ers do, too. If it happens again, ask for an antibiotic before they do any internal procedures.

Thanks for all your replies.

Yea, I should have asked them before they did anything....I still can't believe they did it without giving me something though....you'd think that would be common practice?? UGHHHH :headbang:

Anyway, thanks again for all your responses.

Dee :)

Keflex is a broad spectrum antibiotic -- meaning it treats "mixed gram-positive organisms". Your urine culture most likely grew more than one bacteria. Keflex should help take care of all of them.

Urine is sterile. Anytime an organism is found in the urine, an infection is indicated. A urine culture and sensitivity test should be done. The culture identifies the organism and the sensitivity test shows what medication the bacteria will respond to.

Hope this helps.
