Since starting Elmiron my scalp itches like mad. Is this a common side effect? I have been taking it approx 3 weeks.

Well dry skin is a common side effect which could cause a itchy scalp in some people I bet. I wish I had a good idea for you but my best thought is to treat it like any dry skin and use vasaline when you can. Good luck I hope you feel better!

I am sooo glad to hear someone else say they itch! I feel like Bugs are crawling all over me!
As a former Cosmetologist- I highly reccomend a shampoo with "Tea Tree Oil" in it for the scalp. Apply directly to the scalp, then lather into the rest opf your hair, then let it set for a minute or so. It's a cool, tingly feeling afterwards. (Just did it this morning) Depending on your hair type, you could use it as often as needed :)
For the rest of my body, I use Gerber Oatmeal lotion 2-3times a day. I intend to ask my doctor today exactly which drug is causing this lovely side effect. I am actually showing bruises where I've scratched so much. (ouch!)
Hope this helps,
Good Luck!

I have really dry skin and every soap or body wash I tried made me really itch and break out in hives, even before IC. I asked my dermatologist what I could use and she rx Phisohex which is what the docs use in the hospital. Short and cooler showers will also help keep the moisture in. I also use Cetaphil lotion over my whole body right after I shower and again at night. I do think the elmiron and elavil have made it worse.

HHmm..I have some tea tree oil. I will just dump that in my shampoo.
Lindy, fragrances are often a cause of allergic reactions to shampoo/soaps. You might try more natural products that you can find in health food stores.

Well, tea tree oil is good for hair in general. It will work for oily hair. Shea butter is uber fantastic for dry skin. Can't get enough of the stuff. You can generally find it at health food stores.

I just started tea tree oil in my shampoo two weeks ago, my scalp (because of the weather) has been itching something awful. Tea tree oil has really helped!!

Oh no, Elmiron causes itchy scalp too? Like I really need that too. I haven't taken Elmiron yet, but soon I most likely will be on it.

This past summer, my scalp was extremely itchy and I called the reps from the Elmiron website. I spoke to a representative that said out of their controlled study, there was no reported symptom of itchy scalp. I found out later (after going to a dermatologist) that my "itchiness" was totally unrelated to elmiron. As a matter of fact, the rep from the pharmaceutical company even sent me a survey (one for me and one for my urologist) to document the itching as they never have had any reports on it. I sent the report back stating that the itching I thought was related to Elmiron was due to something else. They are very helpful and will answer any questions for you. liz

I asked a friend who is taking Elmiron and has been on it for awhile. She hasn't had any scalp itching. Maybe it's the time of year when the weather dries out our face, hands, and needless to say, our scalps. The doctor can prescribed some medicated ointment for severe cases or before your scalp gets out of hand.
