Our little Meggie is healing very well from her bad cut ten days ago, but apparently is allergic to the antibiotic given to prevent infection. Yesterday afternoon I thought I saw some "bumps" on her so I didn't give her the antibiotic and started her on benadryl. By morning the hives were obvious all over her. She's better after having three doses of benadryl, but is still a bumpy dog. Thankfully, I knew what to do because she's also allergic to fleas and our vet said we need to have benadryl on hand at all times in case she reacts to anything else.
Monday her stitches come out. And I will find out exactly what antibiotic we need to avoid for her in the future.
She's really being a little lover with her foot in the bandage. Thankfully, the hives don't seem to be bothering her --- I think because we caught it early.

Donna, was it cephalexin (Keflex)? My Dachshund has skin allergies and sometimes gets staph infections. Cephalexin is what they usually prescribe for dogs, but she has really bad GI reactions to it. We have to give her Baytril, which is unfortunately more $$$$, but is easier on her tummy. Just curious if your baby was allergic to the same thing :).

I'm not sure what the antibiotic was. We take her to have her stitches removed probably tomorrow and I'll ask our vet what was in the antibiotic pills. We were kind of stressed out the night he sewed her up and since it was after hours, hubby and I were surgery assistants. She's better today --- the welts are beginning to go down.

Donna,
I hope Meggie gets better soon. When I was growing up I had two dalmations and I love them! When every I see someone walking their dalmation, I stop whatever I am doing and go and ask if I can pet their dog. I bet that Meggie has a lot of character too! Can you share of pic of her?
