View Full Version : Boric acid for yeast and UTI's
I have a new theory. I have been on boric acid douches every other day for a year for recurrent yeast infections. Well, funny how I have had 6 bladder infections since then. I think the entire ph and vaginal lining protective layer have been compromised and left me vulnerable to these UTI's. If I'm wrong with this theory, I am all out of ideas.

Hmmm... now this is very interesting. I think your conclusion makes sense. If you're too high in acid, the tissues can become irritated, inflamed and, perhaps, less able to fight off infection. Guess you won't know until you stop the Boric Acid.
BTW... I've used Boric Acid... but never for as long as you. Are you sure it's supposed to be used over the long term? At the most, I've used at 7 days.... or once a week for a month or so.
Jill :)
I used it so long because I was taking antiobiotics for twice weekly installations (that did nothing) and had so many infections that I was trying to prevent yeast at all costs.

Perhaps you should leave off the boric acid and try acidophilus capsules instead to deal with the yeast?
Where do you get boric acid?

Last place I got it was a drugstore...I asked the pharmacist for it.

I take boric acid in capsule form (vaginally) and I don't get UTI's, and it stops my yeast infections dead in it's tracks. Douching is awful. :(

I heard excess douching is not good for the vagina PH or something like that.
As anybody else heard that? I also heard about the acidophilus capsules. It is worth a try. I get yeast infections too!

Hi Mel,
I have heard that about douching. It gets rid of good bacteria or something. My ob/gyn says that it is not a good thing to do, and that's why she put me on boric acid capsules, to help with the yeast problem. They really do help.

HI, I was happy to see the subject of boric acid. I have some questions. My doctor wanted me to try boric acid capsules for yeast. He said it can stop a yeast infection, even when it's not the candida strain of yeast. He also said it's reletively inexpensive. I went to my coumpound pharmacist and she said it won't kill yeast, it will just prevent an infection. I've read conflicting material. What is everyone's experience??? Also what dose and how many nights do you use it to get good results?? I bought 5 capsules for $15!!!! ( Since I have VERY sensitive tissue down there, we were just trying it out right now, that is why the 5 capsules) Is that more than it usually costs?? I'm thinking maybe a normal pharmacy would be cheaper. Any info is apreciated :) This time the Diflucan isn't helping. Thanks, Grace

I have had too many times when Diflucan didn't help. I don't know anything but wish you the best of luck and would love to know it goes for you.

Katrina, Thanks for your reply. I didn't have much luck getting info. here. I have found out that boric acid gives me diarheah :( I got my nerve up to try another otc cream,( they cause alot of irritation and burn my bladder) I am going to a md/ alternative dr, he is also a christian ( I like this mix) He's retiring this year though. He's run some tests on me and I hope to get some help here. In the meantime, I'm praying lots. Good luck to you too, Grace :)

Is acidophilus ok to take or will it cause an IC flare? I have chronic yeast infections too.

Pam, I recently gave up taking Diflucan all the time and started taking acidophilus. The bottle says "Acidophilus is a friendly bacteria found naturally in the intestinal tract. Acidophilus promotes a favorable balbance of intestinal bacteria and supports the healthy functioning of the intestinal system"
"warning: Pregnant or lactating women should consult a doctor before using any product"
It is not making me flare...and is preventing yeast!

Others say the same thing. You can search this Yeast section on acidophilus and find a lot of posts.

I've taken Acidophilus for years, but was afraid to try it now. I will start up again. It is pretty good at preventing the yeast attack, but I find if I'm taking antibiotics, there's just about nothing I can do to prevent it, except prophylactic treatment with Monistat or Diflucan, but Diflucan usually doesn't cure mine.

You can even put plain yogurt up and on your vagina. It contains acidophilus and is very cooling and soothing for burning. It is an old midwive's trick. Just wear a menstrual pad and wash it off after about an hour.

I used to do that years ago - very soothing. I've been plagued with yeast infections since I was 13 years old.

I did the boric acid capsules, inserting 1 capsule vaginally at bedtime 2x/week. They really did seem to help. I don't recall mine being that expensive though..seems like I got 7 for about $5. Another tip to help fight off yeast; watch your sugar intake. Yeasts thrive on sugar. Also, I used to have ALOT of yeast infections while I was on HRT. After I switched hormone pills, the yeast infections cleared up, so it could be a hormone thing.
As far as douching goes, my doctor explained that the vagina is self cleaning, so douching is not necessary. Something to keep in mind....if you do douche, and you have an infection, it is possible that it can push the infection farther up into the vagina, causing a pelvic infection.

For me the Boric Acid capsules where like a mircle cure. I had a constant yeast infection for over 3 years. No matter what I took it never ever let up.I took ketakonazole(SP) pills for months at a time nothing helped. And also had the IC bad along with it.
My Gyno finally said I have read that Boric Acid capsules will work for this type of Chronic yeast. He wrote me out a prescription the drug store does have to make the capsules fill capsules up with Boric Acid. Rite Aid was horrified they said sounds like a cure right out of the dark ages and said they couldn't make them. I did find a drugstore to make them up for me. I used one morning and at bedtime. After about a week The yeast was finally finally getting better! I still have yeast off and on and the Boric Acid is a mircle cure for me.Now I just have to use a few and its gone. And I do find the IC gets so bad when I'm yeasty so stopping the yeast is helping the IC.

Hi Ruth:
Acidophilus is an over the counter capsule containing the acidophilus bacteria that is ordinarily present in our bodies, but when compromised, as when taking antibiotics, can result in a yeast infection. I take 2 a day every day and have for years. I think it helps prevent infections. Some yogurt has the same bacteria and I've actually duoched with plain yogurt and lactobacillus milk at the end of a particularly tough yeast infection. It is soothing.
Hope this helps.

I also use Boric Acid suppositories with success! Very easy, very cheap and they do seem to help greatly. My yeast, Candida Glabrata, is resistent to most common OTC meds and it takes ALOT of diflucan to kill it. The Boric Acid suppositories are much less traumatic and far more easy to use.

I have been battling a long ter yeast infection for almost a year. I was on diflucan for a while but as soon as I went of of it, it all started again. The only sympton of yeast I get is the itchy tingling feeling in my vaginal area. I am beginning to think I may have vulvodynia because of this feeling (it's right in the vulvo area) but when I go in for a yeast culture I still have a small amount. SSSSOOO AAANNNOOOYYIINNGG!!!! I have been to the bottom of the barrel and am trying to crawl out of it. I have doing the boric acid suppositories. I think they are helping, but I have been doing some research online and have been reading that for a long term yeast treatment I should be inserting two tablets a day for 2-4 weeks. I have only been doing 1 suppository a week. I am going to try this and hopefully it will nip it But all the research (online) I read said that boric acid suppositories have the highest percentage treatment rate. Has anyone else done the 2x a day longterm treatment?? I feel like my external area will be raw done there

Dojakitty you may have better luck starting a new thread with your question. My own person problem with yeast probiotics made a big difference long term with so I can't speak to your question.

Boric acid burns me now since I've developed Vulvodynia.
