Has anyone been prescribed fosomax for osteopenia bone loss? I'm afraid of it because it can cause esophogus ulcers and I wonder about the bladder.

I don't know whether it might be an irritant. Osteoperosis can be very serious --- I think if I were facing that possibility, I would at least give the medication a try. If you do have a reaction to it, the side effects should go away when you stop the medication. I strongly suggest you discuss your concerns with your doctor and make your decision after you have talked about the pros and cons.

Warm hugs,
Donna

I taKe Actonel once a week for osteoporosis (I think it is the alternative to Fosomax) and I have begun to think it causes a mild flare on the one day I take it. It does not last, however, and it could be in my head.

I take fosamax once weekly and I don't think it bothers my bladder. I've been on it for a few years. You should try it, bone loss is very serious. Good luck!

Foxamax bothers me but it doesn't hit until about 4 weeks after I start it. Then it gets progressively worse. That's why I didn't make the connection right away. Have tried this several times and always the same in about week 3-4. It takes 4 weeks off it to recover. I'm currently experimenting with taking it monthly as an alternative.

I've also just been diagnosed with osteoporosis, and prescribed Fosamax, but I'm researching it before trying it. What I've found so far hasn't been good. I think this is potentially a dangerous drug (well, all drugs have side -effects) but there are lawsuits currently against the makers of Fosamax for jaw bone necrosis. I just dont like the whole gastro irritation angle of these biophosphate type drugs like this or Actonel. I'm not saying I won't ever take it, but I'm taking a wait and see approach about it, particularly with the IC. Of course osteoporosis is not a good thing, but as with any diagnosis, I think we should all be informed patients, consumers and advocates before jumping into a medication. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has problems with it and IC, etc.

I use to take Fosamax, I did have problems with it but not with my IC. I am not using Fortical Nasal Spray - you use this daily -been using this for almost 6 months now, having no problems.
