Does anyone take antibiotics that doesn't cause flares? The treatment is painful but for a UTI it works. For hours today I felt like I had a bonfire in my bladder.

I have used Cipro and Levaquin also with no problems... I once was on Macrobid, for 3 months straight, because I had a never ending bladder infection...

I had good luck with Bactrim. In general I don't notice my IC symptoms are worse when I take antibiotics. Usually there better the first 2 days then get worse after

All antibiotics cause(d) me to flare three days AFTER finishing them, then that lasts almost a week. Spoke to my doc about putting me on the month long doxy (I was just on it two weeks ago for ten days for my tonsils), I felt great the last seven days on them then it all came back three days later, doc was convinced enough to start me on the month long doxy and throw two weeks at my hubby, cross yer fingers, gonna post some of this in a new threat too. But as for an anti w/no flares, thats gonna depend on the person. Take care!

Thank you Songbird for coming up with this great description of how my bladder has been feeling. LOL
About a week ago I started to get the bladder cramping and was sure I was coming down with a bladder infection. I took some Macrobid cause I had it here for Maintenance in case I felt one coming on. Took it for two days, then stopped. A couple of days later I had the "bonfire" feeling in my bladder. Is it the Macrobid? Anyway, I've since gone to the doctor and am now on a new antibiotic but I still have the "bonfire" in my bladder. I searched the forums and I see I'm not the only one that maybe has trouble with antibiotics hurting their bladder even more. Anywords of advise of the wise? I sat at the ER last night with my mom. Apparently my dad has a very large tumor in his liver and is end-stage cancer. So I guess now is not a good time for a flare-up. Anyway, if someone can tell me if that feeling will go away after the antibiotics have cleared out I'll be thinking there's a light at the end of the tunnel so I can cope better with the other thing. I have muscle relaxers from the doc for about 2 more days then they're gone. I haven't had any major flare-ups in probably more than a year. Thanks, Sherrie

I'm taking minocycline for my acne. It seems to keep the UTIs away too, which is great. I have no side effects from this medicine.

I have to take Keflex every day for prevention of bladder infections on top of the Elmiron. The Keflex does not bother me. It is a good all purpose antibiotic.

Levaquin - Ouch! But it worked. I seldom get UTI, but did recently. Since the Sulfa type antibiotics hurt last time and Macrobid is out of the question I tried Levaquin. Potent thing. It knocked out the UTI in 2 days and almost me along with it. Big time pain as my bladder did the IC thing. Had to take pain med. I don't know what's worse, taking the Septra type antibiotic for 5 days longer and dealing with that or the intensity of the 2 days I was on the Levaquin. And, if I choose Levaquin again it's going to cost a co pay out of pocket of $50 on top of my regular meds. Ouch in the pocketbook. So, still looking for ideas. Not that I'm expecting another UTI but still open to hear which ones don't flare the IC. I thiink Cipro hurt the IC some years ago. I just pray I don't get UTI's and care and pray for everyone here.

Songbird, I so feel for you, my life would be pure *&%# if antibiotics did that to me. Thank you for letting us know how you do. Hopefully your experiences of this pain will help prevent someone else's pain. :grouphug: I so wish I could help you more now.

Katrina,
Thank you for your warm wishes. Thank you everyone who answered me. Not everyone is alike. Someone else might take the very same antibiotic and feel fine. I pray I don't have any more UTI's. IC is quite enough to handle.
