Hi everyone,
First of all, I want to thank everyone for the great advice I get here. I usually don't post a whole lot because I'm new to this disease so I feel like I don't have enough experience yet to give good advice. However, I'm always in NEED of ADVICE. As some of you know my main symptom is burning to the point of not being able to sit for very long. I would like to know... IF you have this symptom what meds work the best for it.. I'm going to my urogyno on Nov 2 and I want to tell him about a few drugs that he could perscribe for this particular symptom. I know that one drug is pyridium.. is there anything else that anyone can think of? also, I'm in Canada so are the names usually the same or different.
Thanks so much!!!
Krista
Also, this burning i have is not a uti because I had it checked..

Hi Krista! I'm sorry to hear that you have IC and have burning as a symptom. Even though you are newer to IC it's good to know you are here to support others who have IC. It's great that you feel comfortable enough to ask your question.

You are right about pyridium. There is also pyridium plus (which I think works better then just plain pyridium). I've heard that it's not always safe to stay on that med for longer periods of time. Personally, I don't usually have burning as a primary symptom, but have experienced it some. I did have some other pain symptoms and have found the antihistamine I am on Ataraz and the Elavil (anti-depressant that is used in low doses as a pain med) to have helped tremendously in my overall pain. I'm not sure if this would help with the burning, but it has helped me with my overall pain/discomforting symptoms. I also take prelief (which is not an actual medication) which is a dietary supplement that removes acid out of the food as you eat it. Have you also tried the IC diet? That can help too. There's lot of great info on the main ICN page in the patient handbook.

I hope that you are feeling better soon! Oh, it might also help to drink lots of water. Some people are sensitive to different kinds of water - some drink certain brands of bottled water. Some brands of bottled water have minerals in them that can irritate the bladder. Sometimes tap water can also be an irritant because of the chemicals that are used to sanitize drinking water.

Take Care!
Hugs~
Jennifer

Here's the link to the Drug Glossary --- which will give you the names of the various drugs in Canada: http://www.ic-network.com/glossary

That said, for burning I usually take pyridium, but it's not meant for long term use. I have also taken Urised. Both will change urine color and they do stain everything the colored urine touches.
