Hi all, I was diagnosed with IC by a uro who specialises in IC so I should be able to trust what she is on about... however, I have not yet had my cystoscopy. (She diagnosed based on my history, urine analysis and urodynamic testing.) I just bought the "IC survivor guide" and it says that for IC patients, pain increases as the bladder fills and is relieved by voiding. Now, my problem is that pain gets 100 x worse AFTER I urinate. On good days, if I can hold off for long enough the pain will start to lessen even if my bladder is relatively full- I just get pressure that says I need to go. After I void the pain starts right back up again. (On bad days, the pain will just get worse and worse and urinating doesn't alleviate it.) :loco:
What do you guys think???? Do you all have relef after voiding???? I really am worried that perhaps I have been misdiagnosed.
Thanks for your feedback,
Sara

I'm like you Anxious One, I get pain after urinating. It starts as a pulsating pain immeditately after I pee (which is probably bladder spasms) and then just constant pain after that. Sometimes it is so uncomfortable that if it is during the night, I can't go back to bed. I have to stand and just walk because I can't sit either. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often anymore. I am on Elmiron and Paxil. The cystoscopy should show for sure and if you do indeed have IC, your uro will treat you and you will more than likely get great relief!
I have that pulsating pain too. i don't actually suffer from pain everyday with my IC, usually just the discomfort/urge/freq drives me crazy, but on the days I do get pain i have that same experience.
try not to worry too much because stress affects IC bad, just remember a book can't cover everyone and a lot of us have slightly different symptoms!
welcome to the boards i hope you find them a great place for support <3
When I am flared I may have momentary relief after voiding, but it usually aggravates my bladder more...

I'm not diognoised with ic, but I get something similar to what you described. I find on some days if I can break the cycle of urinating so that I go say an hour or 2 it calms down, but then once I go again, it's off again. Back to every 15-30 mins. I get pain in my bladder region, although urinating doesn't tend to hurt for me, it seems some of the pain decreases when I can hold off, during one of those spells. Of course trying to hold off it not always possible.

If I'm flaring, it always hurts worse immediately after urinating.
Donna
Sometimes the first sign that I am about to flare is pain after urinating. If I am urinating and my bladder is not full or near full, I can guarantee it will hurt to some extent though. The only thing that I've found helpful is trying to keep my bladder very full. I drink a gallon of liquid a day. You might think that hard, but it slowly crept up on me. I do know that most of the time if my bladder is truly full, there will be less or even no pain, unless I am about to flare. When it hurts, I immediately reach for my nearest handy ice bag thingie (I have one on each floor of our house).
I learned quite some time ago, that when I had a cold or something fluish coming or ongoing, that the most effective remedy was to push fluids. So when IC hit, I immediately began pushing fluids. Course I thought it was a uti and that would have been my response to that also. Well, my response to being sick what ever the cause, is to start drinking a lot of water. ;)

Myli, I'm with you on this one. When my Uro asked how much water I drink a day I said around 1 gallon, and he did a double take! I do find keeping my bladder relatively full & active makes me feel less of my IC symptoms.
When flaring, my most painful time is towards the end of urinating. The amount of pain seems to rapidly increase while about the last 1/4 of urine is leaving, and reaches a peak right as I finish. Makes me shudder to think about it!
