I've never had a UTI (or at least never a positive urine culture when a UTI was suspected). How do I distinguish between the two (especially important right now, since I'm pregnant)? Thanks!

Usually a UTI will show up when they do a urine sample. IC doesn't. Chelsey

I can't always tell the difference between a UTI and an IC flare. I use a home test kit and if it says infection, I call my doctor. And since the test kits aren't 100%, if I'm not better within 24 hours, I call anyhow.

A home test kit isn't a bad idea - this IC thing has been causing me so much stress with the pregnancy and all. Three weeks ago, I was absolutely convinced I had a UTI, but the urine culture was negative, as always. I guess the home kit could help save a trip to the doctor (all he was able to tell me was that if I wasn't sure if it was a UTI or a flare of the IC, then I should just come in to get tested). Thanks!

Rae,
FYI I also thought I might have a UTI a few wks ago. I got one of those kits. It told me I might have a UTI cuz of high White blood cell count (which is normal to have in preg). So be sure to get a test with the other factor (i think it tests for nitrates). That's a better predictor. And if all else fails go to the Dr for a quick urine test.

Just lately when they test my urine it comes up positive (with nitates). But when they do a culture on it it always come up negative. Why is that?
