Hey there guys,
Last night I was cooking dinner and I was in the kitchen when all of the sudden I started feeling like I was giving birth. It felt like my insides were going to come out, and at the same time I got a sharp uncomfortable feeling in my rectum. I continued to have this constipated/ labor feeling for the rest of the night. When I rolled over in my sleep I was woken with pain, and now I am on my way to work and I am extremely tired. And now my abdomine is extremely tender to the touch, I can feelthe pants I am wearing which is not normal.
Well, any suggestions, Is there any one else that has every had any of these symptoms I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you,
Kirsten

Hmmm.... yes, I've had something similar.... when I get bladder spasms it feels like I'm trying to deliver my bladder (I haven't had a baby yet but I always imagine this sensation is much like what being in labor would be like.) I also sometimes get rectal pain or the sensation that a golf ball or something is stuck inside my rectum -- you try to push the poop out & nothing comes & it just hurts.
Anyway, I think the labor thing is bladder spasms, and I think the rectal issue is a combination of nerves firing wrong in the pelvis due to your IC going nuts, and also has to do with tight pelvic floor muscles. If you've ever read the book "A Headache In The Pelvis" it describes this "golf ball in the rectum" sensation (it's where I got the words to describe the sensation) and suggests this is part of malfuctioning pelvic muscles.
I find that taking a hot bath, resting, and taking a muscle relaxant like Flexeril or Zanaflex in addition to my usual half a mg of Klonopin before bed can really help. You could also try other antispasmodics like hyoscyamine (Levsin) for the labor feeling as well. Discuss the sensations with your doc and he/she should have some suggestions.
Hope this helps.

Jen is right. Your problem could be bladder spasms.
I do think that if this is a new symptom, you should be telephoning your doctor's office.

Agreed. I have had similar problems....my doctor told me I was having bladder spasms. There are many different anti spasmodic meds...took me a long time to find one that helped. Also agreed....all new symptoms you should call your doctor.
I hope you feel better soon!!!!!!!

I called my doctor yesterday, and was seen by them they checked my urine and i don't have an infection but i did have abit of protein. She said that she wasn't sure that the pain I was having has anything to do with IC she thinks it might be IBS. My blood pressure was up when I went to the doctor. I also I had a low greade fever. I was in a significant amount of pain. But they told me start my instillations again and hopefully it iwll quite down the pain if not we would know it was something else.
Thank you for you replies.

:hi: Kristen,
I agree with the others.. I am glad there is no infection.. However the upped blood pressure and low grad fever, is a good indication of a flare.. when your in pain your blood pressure goes up..... hope you have a better day..

I've had pain similar to this before. Although I don't know what giving birth feels like. ;) Anyways, I'm glad you were able to get in to see your doctor. I hope you start feeling better really soon. Hopefully it isn't IBS. Chelsey
I've been in a royal flare the last couple of weeks, praying it was another UTI so I'd have the hope that I'd be feeling better soon. No such luck. It's a flare. It's the first full blown flare I've had while having an IBS flare. I had been on zelnorm a couple of years ago but it didn't give me much relief. Well, out of despiration I tried it again and can't believe how much it's been helping.
I talked to my dr' office yesterday and the nurse told me that because of our seasonal weather they are getting alot of extra calls from ICer with x-tra pain. BUT, like she told me......ALWAYS go for a urine culture. It's too dangerous to just assume it's just another flare.
tons of hugs to all~

I am not sure this will help but i get intense spasms, that actually can be seen. It feels like my body is being punched from the inside, this is usually followed by pain in the vagina and rectum, a sharp and stabbing pain. For me this signals a flare. used to use Valium to help a bit with spasms. i had some excercises to relax the pelvic floor but they do not work that well but a heating pad helps.

But they told me start my instillations again and hopefully it will quiet down the pain if not we would know it was something else.
I truly hope you get some relief soon. Just wanted you to know that some of us do not respond to the instillations, so if they don't help, it doesn't necessarily mean it is something else and not the IC. If you have had instills in the past and they helped, then I would be more apt to believe the dr's statement. I've had the symptoms you are describing; in fact my oldest daughter reminded me after I had been dx that I used to sometimes say that it felt like my bladder was falling out. I agree with the other ladies that have posted.....sounds like bladder spasms. Gosh I hope you feel better really, really soon!

I occasionally feel like I'm getting the flu too, but it goes away.... I also have IC and fibro, so it's tough for me to tell what it is too. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone with that symptom. It's weird-- but I hope you really aren't getting the flu!!!

Donutgirl,
Thank you very muchh for that I guess I will talk to my doctor about the fact that maybe it is bladder spasms. Thank you for helping me feel like I am not alone.

I get the flu feeling quite frequently too. I can never tell if it has anything to do with the IB, IC or something else. I don't have fibromyalgia so I know it isn't that. My body aches from head to toe, I feel like I have a fever of 104, but I don't. It's the most miserable feeling. I'll be interested to see if others also have this experience.

When I had bad bladder spasms, I was passing blood and it turned out to be an infection. It was the worst infection I have ever had. They had no trouble confirming it was an infection, a very bad one with lots and lots of germs showing up in the lab test.
I have had the rectal spasms, very infrequently. In a way, they remind me of having a charlie horse, but much more painful. I've not found anything to stop them when they happen. Very clearly, they do not mean I need a trip to the restroom. Such a trip proves fruitless. Nothing will be getting through the spasm and I have had them last for hours. However, since this happens so infrequently, I have not sought help for them either. I just live through it. Usually, by resorting to bed rest.
/hugs,
Myli

Well I am not sure, but since I got IC I never actually get anything else. I will feel kind of off for a day or two when exposed to other illnesses like flu or cold and then it just goes away, maybe that is it. I think that fibromalgia can feel "flu like". Also I have I think my md called it transient pain, when my Ic gets really bad my skin seems to hurt, like I am aching or burning, it lessens as the flares pass. I am being treated now with nerve blocks to help with this kind of pain-it is a misfiring or over firing in the nerves caused by the constant pain signals from the IC. Maybe one of these fits and I hope you feel better soon, being sick on top of IC is just awful!

I never connected that to IC but I have noticed that my skin is tender to the touch. Sometimes I feel every wrinkle and seam in my clothes and touching myself or pressure on my skin is almost painful. I have always had dry and sensitive skin and cannot use any commercial soaps or body wash in the shower. I would break out in hives sometimes and drive myself nuts with the itching. My dermatologist finally gave me a scrip for Phisohex cleanser for the shower. Linda
