I'm trying to get in the habit of working out at least two times a week with weights. I'm 42 and would like to keep my weight in check. It's getting harder and harder every year.
I was just beginning to feel better after suffering a flare from the urodynamics procedure I underwent two weeks ago.
Yesterday I went to the gym and while working on the inner and outer thigh machines I started feeling ic (urethral) pain. It is a dull stabbing pain that occurs every few seconds. After dinner I just gave up and went right to bed. This morning the pain was barely there but after an hour on my feet (at work) the pain came back.
Today I searched around and found a few references to working out and IC but not much about strength training. I also looked into the possibility that the pelvic floor muscles may be causing my pain but I can't confirm that either.
Does anyone know what I did to myself while working out? Are there exercises that I should avoid? :bonk:

Vonnie,
can't help you with that one, except to say I have that pain, it started out of no where......

I have no idea to be honest, but sometimes I wonder if back pain has something to do with IC pain. I've been thinking that ever since I read about how researchers did this study where they stimulated the sacral nerves of IC patients and the patients got a lot better. It made me wonder if there is some connection between those nerves in the lower back and IC.

I hope you feel better soon, and brava to you for keeping fit in spite of this illness! I'm 43 and ought to be lifting weights but...well, I need to kick myself in the rear end and get out there and do it, that's what, LOL...boy you are right, keeping the weight in check seems harder each passing year. Wasn't so hard at 20....but now...eek!

Blessings, Lori

I do weight training a few days a week. I know the feeling you are talking about. When I got the feeling I would stop. WHEn feeling better, decrease the weights and try to build up to more repetitions. If you find that the machines bother you Don't use them. I gradually got used to the leg press, inner and outer thigh resistance, and I can do all the upper body weights IF I use a reasonable degree of weights. I also found that I can't do an incline on the treadmill anymore. That gave me the urethral pain. There are some days I still get it, and other times I don't .. There is no rhyme or reason to this IC!! When I was first diagnosed in March, I was really hurting and didn't do much but walk. After 6 months on meds, I feel better to resume these activities. Hope this helps. liz

What medications are you on that are making you feel better??? I am newly diagnosed diabetic, and am supposed to walk after every meal on the treadmill, but it sure starts up my urethral pain. I have an appt. with another urologist next week, two years ago, my urologist said there was nothing he could do for me, go to a pain mangement specialist, which I did, but now it's getting worse, and I'm hoping this new urologist might be able to give me meds. to help it. It makes me so mad, because at 71 years old, I was so glad to be able to walk as much as I do, but now this darn IC is keeping me from doing even that!!! Thanks for any info.

Maybe you did too heavy of weights??? That could of caused some stress on your bladder. I'm not really sure though. You might ask your dr. and see what she/he says about it. I saw that you mentioned urodymanics. I'm am starting that next week. How did that go for you? Do you think that it is working so far? I'm scared because this procedure seems scary. Since my mom is an RN they are going to show her how to do it. That way I won't have to keep going to the dr. :yikes: I'm sure I'll go several times before starting it on my own, but it still sounds really scary. Chelsey

What medications are you on that are making you feel better???

I take Elmiron, Zyrtec and Doxazosin daily. My urologist just prescribed the doxazosin for my urethral pain a few weeks ago. It is actually a medication for enlarged prostate. It works for women by opening up or relaxing the urethra. When I have a flare I also take Uristat or Pyridium, and Ditropan. Then I take prelief before eating anything.

I've noticed that if I get off my feet I will have some relief but I can't always do that. :hi:

:woohoo: That was it. My urethral pain was gone this morning. This afternoon I went to the gym and did all the same exercises I did two days ago but dropped the weight by 30% on the inner and outer thigh machine and leg press. :woohoo:

Thanks for sharing your experience. It was awsome reading your response because I have never had someone tell me that they have experienced the same feeling or understand how ic pain feels. I wish I had found you guys a long time ago!
I took your advice and backed down on the weights by 30%. I feel great. I now know that I have to be more careful. Thanks!

Thanks for telling me what meds you are on. I am writing them down and will take the list to my NEW urologist next week, and hope she will prescribe one or more of them and see if they give me relief too. I have had nothing but pain meds for two years, nothing like Elmiron etc.

:hmm: I did read some info. about taking tums/prelief before a meal. Which one is better?

Which ever one works for you, I think that is a very individual kind of thing. I am using Prelief, hadn't heard of Tums for this until I started reading these boards this week. It is also clear that different uro's prescribe differing drugs. For instance, I have never even been offered a pain reliever drug.

:hi: Thanks for your "E"! The author of A Taste of the Good Life-PRELIEF works so much better than Tums....but doctors at Un. of Cal. put the prelief to the test and found otherwise.(Prelief is calcium glycerophosphate) Does it help IC patients??????????????some are helped & others aren't.
:hmm:
I'm going to get Prelief for a try!!!!!!!
