I started in AA 13 years ago for alcoholism. In my opinion it is a wonderful program that has taught me all about living life sober. It isn't for everyone, but for those who want it - it is a lifesaver.

AA has a website: http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org/

Here is a passage that is read at the beginning of most meetings:

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Hi, I have beent hinkgin abou tthis and wondering if I should post my story and I said why not. I have gone overeater anymonus in1989 and alanon and aa. I am addicted to xanax and went through 100 of my moms pills an dlived to tell the story. She was dying back then in90 and went through the 100 pills in 2 weeks. She knew I was addicted and I didn't know it back then. It is an anti anxiety drug. I came off cold turkey with the helpfof oa and sponsor and freinds from other programs and my oa program. I thank the good Lord that I am clean today.I take prescripitons as prescribed which I do. i love sugar and junk food too. I haven't been to a meeting in quite awhile with me working and all. but it is great to have this board. That is my story. anyone else? grouphug

hi,
I got clean in NA. It was great for me. I used narcotics and cocaine, off and on since I was in 7th grade, went to my first inpatient treatment center in 9th grade, then again in 1894, got out of treatment and started drinking!! Then finally found NA and got clean April 17 1985.
I am so glad I had meetings and support to get me through
