Hi,

I am seeing my pain doctor for the second time tomorrow morning and one of the meds. I want to discuss with him is TOPAMAX. I would love to hear from anyone who has or is taking it and if they find it helps with the IC/pelvic/low back pain. Also, what about the side effects - are they bad at first or what?
I have a feeling my doc may want to put me on Neurontin and not that I have a problem but I have heard it can put a lot of weight on which I don't want to do. I am quite fine with my weight as it is. That is why I would prefer if he would prescribe Topamax first because I have read that it is more likely to cause weight loss than gain. Now that I can handle - if I could only find my appetite!! If anyone finds an appetite looking for an owner, please leave me a message. I haven't had one for years and most days I could care less if I eat or not. I used to be a pretty good eater at one time - in my healthier days. But between depression and pain, who wants to eat?!
I know we are all different and for some eating is a comfort. I wish that were so in my case because I could use more nutrients plus a litle comfort would also be welcome.

Thanks for any information, advice or whatever - like I said even an appetite would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you think I am cracking up from the continuous bladder, low back and pelvic pain?! I know I am beginning to wonder myself. Anyway, thanks for any sort of help or support.

Sincere thanks,

LOUISE :bunny:

Hi
I took it for migraines, after suffering for many years. You need to get up on dose very slowly, and yes, there are side effects. There is a very good website that I used to read (not as good as this one). I'll see if I can find it for you. Nobody knows more about these meds than the folks who are taking them! I actually stopped taking the topamax last week, with my diagnosis of IC. It is interesting that IC started just when I got up to full dose of topamax, but that could be a coincidence.

my ic symptoms started while i was on tegretol.....

:hmm:

lots of stuff on tegretol about inflammation this, inflammation that, etc....

maybe the same for topamax.

i called novartis and the fda and told them.

you can always call the company that makes topomax and ask if the side effects are related to inflammation.

good luck. :)

It is very acidic and has caused acidosis at levels as low as 50mg. It killed my bladder and I had no appetite and was not able to eat. It was horrible.

i also took topamax for a short time. cannot remember if it was at the same time as the tegretol. the shrink gave it to me because she had heard it helped people lose weight. i gained a lot of weight on all her meds for my anxiety and depression. had some bad dental experience. thru me for a loop.

I do not know about topamax, but I am on neurontin, so far so good. It has made it possible for me to sleep through the night!!!!!! Something I have not done in two years! I have not noticed weight gain yet, i am only onit once a day so far and I already packed on 30 pounds (maybe a bit more) from elavil. the weight gain is a negative but if it eliminates pain? i stopped the elavil a good while ago, it was not agreeing with me (besides weight gain) but the weight has stayed-my goal now to reduce pain so i can start walking again, hoping that helps with weight lose also i think the Ic diet is part of the problem veggies are had to eat with no spice or sauce!
good luck to you.

I was at pain clinic this week, and Dr suggested that I go back on the topamax which I had been taking for migraine, as it could aslo be helpful for IC. This dr is well versed in IC. Just wanted to pass that info on to you all.

My doctor just prescribed Topamax for me today for chronic pain.

I'm a bit freaked out now after reading the info on it about it causing acidosis. That's something I already think is a problem and I'm trying to alkalanize. I don't need anything more acidic! I'll give it a try though I guess.

Also it seems to make people lose a lot of weight, and I can't afford to lose any weight :/

These drugs seems to fix one problem and cause 10 more!
