I was diagonised with IC in Jan 2004. I have days where I have increased frequency and sometimes I will feel a "thumping" in my stomach, and then I will have a tugging in the vaginal area. I figure when I'm feeling these things it's a flare.

Yesterday was the worst I ever felt. I would go to the bathroom and for at least 10 min afterwards I would feel a burning in my vaginal area. By the time I got home from work I was in so much pain and I couldn't help but pee every ten minutes or so.

I called the hosptial and had my Uro paged. He called me back and I told him that I had burning after I peeded and my stomach felt tender. I was also beginning to feel that "thumping " feeling in my abdomen.

He said he felt like it was a bladder infection and he prescribed Cipro and those pills that make your pee turn organge. My huband went and got my meds and I took them right away. I layed with a heating pad on me and tried to fall asleep. It took about 4 hours for the burning to stop after I peed and today it feels ok. (I'm still taking the Cirpro --for 7 days--but I'm not taking those pills that turn my pee orange--I wanted to see if I still had the burning).

Do you think it was a flare or was I getting an infection?

This is all so new to me. I never had any infections before I was diagonised with IC. I just started to have frequency after my hyst. and my GYN, set me right aways to a URO so we could figure it out. For that I'm greatful--I didn't have to suffer for years like most of you have had to.

I would like your opinion on if it was an infection or a UTI. I just hope I never feel that way again!

UTI stands for Urinary Track Infection....so basically if it was a UTI it was an infection. As to weather or not is was a flare or a UTI....to get really fast relief from of that kind from Cipro sounds like it probably was a UTI....but in your case ....if you never had an infection before...you could be just being helped from the antibiotic for another reason. I am on constant long term antibiotic treatment and I do think it helps my IC some. I know that may not really answer you question...but the truth is that without a test...it could be either.

I have to agree that it sounds like an infection. I hope you continue to feel better.

Sending healing thoughts,

Take the meds the dr. gave you. If you don't feel better soon, then I'd make an appt. and go see your uro or primary. You might want them to do a test for a UTI. Chelsey
