We had to put our 16 year old poodle to sleep this summer.........it was heart wrenching as many of you know........but she chose her time......my husband was out of town, but all three of my kids (17, 19, and 22) came with me. First off, I have to say how incredibly proud I was of how each of them behaved...........the tears, the cuddling of her before it was time.......all of that........I was just amazed at their compassion.......

Well, 6 days later...........mommy brings home a 4 week old kitten, :cat: that we named Diego.....

Howie, my bichon, is hilarious with the kitten (who recently got neutered and de-clawed) he is gentle, knowing Diego is a baby, has been great during the kitten's recovery...... and they play like crazy, and even sleep cuddled up together.......I know many of you have the same thing in your house...........but to us, this is a whole new gig.......the dog and cat loving each other (our older cat is the epitomy of the aloof feline)

here is a picture if you want to see.........

 I'm sooooooooo sorry about your 16 year old poodle. I have three pomeranians so that must of been extremely hard. Especially since you've had a wonderful friend over the years. I have a 14 year old cat, and I know that day will come. I will be heart broken. I've had that cat basically my entire life. I love her sooooooo much!!!! Animals are the best thing in the world. Whenever your in a bad mood they can cheer you up very fast. I can have a horrible day, but soon as I walk through my front door and see 5 little faces looking at me, I get so excited. I can be gone only 30 min. and they act as if I've been away forever. I looked at the picture of your dog and cat. They are so cute. I have a cat and dog that are very close friends like that. They sleep together and play a lot. They are extremely cute!!!!!!! Chelsey

The picture is totally adorable. We have had kitties and dogs who were friends. I think the key is that one of them needs to be a baby when they first get together.

Also --- very sorry about your loss.

Warm hugs,
Donna

All we have to say to Howie is"Where's your kitty" and he runs around looking and looking.......Since I spend most of my day hours here alone at home, and I rarely turn on the TV or radio they are good company. It is funny, when I get a phone call and they hear me talking (after it has been quiet for hours) the three animals all come running as if I am talking to them personally :-) My toddlers used to do that!

I love the pics! Sooo cute! I had to put our golden retriever to sleep last Jan. She had a big tumor on her back side. She was only 5 yrs old. My daughter, son and I all cried for days after that. We still miss her till this day. We have cats too. My daughter's two cats and three of my own. One of my cats is over 16 yrs old and still going strong.

I have been looking for a small dog and they are hard to find. I want to get one from the humane society. :dogrun:

All of our animals were strays or abandoned pets. Molly the poodle came to us with the most wacko haircut and red painted nails......hard to believe someone put that much effort into an animal and just dumped it, but apparently they did.........My daughter's friend just told us the story of when they witnessed people dumping a puppy that was just weeks old out on a dirt road.......she her her boyfriend took it.....

Can you imagine........just dumping an animal? Well, those people just don't know what they lost do they?

You know, that is one of my pet peeves(pardon the pun). People get animals and then don't take care of them. They don't spay or neuter them and then they have tons of litters and then dump them! Just does not make sense to me.There are low cost or no cost spay and neuter clinics all over the place. You just have to look for them.

OK! I am off my soap box now. :) Do I sound like Bob Barker??

I agree pets are a huge commitment and you must spay and neuter. We havespayed the 2 females 1 golden retriever 1 brittany spaniel. Our male Golden was a narcotics k-9 and they wanted to keep him intact because it increases there work drive, now that he is retired and older I just haven't done it he is 13 and never leaves my house or fenced in yard, so with my females being safe he remains "the big dog" around here.
I can't imagine the day any of these 3 will have to leave me, they are my sanity somedays.

My animals help me threw so much exp. a four mth old kitten named tom he always seems to know when i'm flareing and knows i need him
He knows he can't get on our bed when my husband is home but let dh walk out of the door for work and here comes tom as fast as he can even if i'm a sleep jumping on the bed making his way under the covers to get under my arm as if he wants me to hug him.
to tell you the truth he is so spoiled i don't think he knows he's a cat i think he thinks he one of the children.

when tinker bell got killed by the dogs i thought i couldnt replace her and no i didn't replace her but tom. has really helped.
tom gets alone well with all the other cats i have and the three rat terriers we have also. he loves to play!

That is so sad!!! Animals are wonderful. I cannot stand people who show animals no respect at all. Especially little babies. I'm glad they found a great home though. Chelsey

I have been there, that had to be one of the hardest things I had to do.Me and my brother sat with our dog and told him how much we loved him. I couldnt not be in the room with him. My brother told me the last thing that goes is the hearing when they are being put to sleep. So we told him we loved him. My dad sat in the car and cried that night. I took a lock of his hair and I still have it. My heart goes out to you and your family.-JOJO

Its horrible to put your pet down.. In the fall of 98 I had to put down my 13 yr old manchester her name was tudy.. such a great dog and loved her dearly.. and miss her very much.. she had arthritis, the last year of her life.. One day she tried to get off the couch and just fell.... she didn't move. just stared ar me and blinked her eyes.... I called the 911 line for the pet er... They said to bring her in.... I finally got Tudy to get up.. she was too big for me to carry.. I toook her in and she had, had a heart attack and was in congential heart failure... they said it would be doubt full she would survive the next 24 hours..... I just cried like a baby... I had, had her forever.... It was like taking my child someplace and leaving, knowing I would never see her again.... It was horrible....
Then this past March just after my birthday I had to have my 3lb toy poodle Angel put to sleep. I had only had her 3 years, but it was very hard.. I mad my husband take her.. I couldn't do it again.....
Well now I have Sir Lucky, Bear and Piper... there just gerat dogs, and I am very attached to Sir Lucky.. because he resembles Tudy in every way... He will come op and lay his head side ways in my lap.. or try to get his 100 lb butt in my lap.. lol... when I am on the pc.. he nips my hand and won't let me use my mouse.. he's too funny....
Hugs
