>A couple of weeks ago I has blood in my urine and you all encouraged me
>to see a Dr. immediately. Well I went to the ER since it was a
>holiday weekend. They did a urinalisis and found blood in my urine
>so they gave me a large dose of cipro. When the culture came back,
>there was no bacteria in it, or as they say, "it was negative." All
>I know is that the unbearable itching that I was enduring went away.
>
>Anyway, today I went to my Urologist because I have seen blood in my
>urine again. He did another urinalisis and found no white blood
>cells and quite a few red. He has scheduled me for an IVP with a
>diagnosis of hematuria. He told me that he suspects a kidney stone
>and if there is not one, he will have to check my bladder again.
>When I asked him what he would be looking for, he said, "cancer."
>He was very optimistic that it would be a kidney stone.
>
>The reason I am writing is that I talked to my sister-in-law and she
>said that her kidney stone was found by a sonogram.

I would appreciate your input. I would like to hear from a lot of others who may have had this experience.
>
>I would much rather have a sonogram for this reason. My
>Instructions to prepare for the IVP:
>DAY BEFORE EXAM: At 5:00 pm drink one bottle of Citrate of Magnesia
>(10 oz). Drink four 8 oz glasses of water between 1:00 pm and 10:00
>pm.
>DAY OF EXAM: May have coffee, water or juice until 3 hours prior to
>exam. May take medication with water at anytime.
>
>Does that sound much more painful than having a sonogram? I have a
>3 oz bladder on a good day. I cannot drink that much water and not
>live in the bathroom. I'll have to wear a foley during the
>procedure since I cannot stay out of the restroom over 30 minutes
>when I am stressed. I also have IBS and that laxative is going to
>put my stomach into a fit. Can you tell I am stressing? Wish I had
>done all of this in the Dr.'s office instead of after I got home.
>
>Well, if anyone can offer me any sage advice on this I would
>appreciate it. Right now, I think I plan to call the Dr. in the AM
>and see if I can talk to him about all my concerns.
>
>Thanks for listening.

The prep is the worst I have had 3 IVP's done in the last few years. The IVP allows them to see stones, particles of stones and function of the kidneys.
Talk to your doctor about your concerns ,
Good luck,
Kelly

Thanks Kelly. I just got a call from my Dr.'s nurse. I asked her about doing a sonogram instead of an IVP. She said that an IVP is more thorough than a sonogram. It shows more of the body than the sonogram. Thanks for the info.

Thanks, Brat. I need all the support I can get. I'm just so tired of having all the "tests" done.

Rowena,
The ivp is better to detect a stone. I've had them done too. It really didn't take as long as I thought it would once the procedure started. Let us know how you did........big hugs...........

I had an IVP after 3 urine cultures were negative with a lot of blood (over 6weeks). It ruled out the stones and possible kidney disease that runs in my family. After that I had the hydrodistention and cystoscope- if you get a choice and your insurance covers it I recomend being asleep for that. Sorry you have to go through this but just think a diagnoses is better than not knowing :( sorry though. Good luck

Thanks so much for the infor and the concern. Guess I'll just have to suck it up and endure it just like all the rest of the "stuff" that's been done to me. The Dr. said that if kidney stones are ruled out, he will look into my bladder, no hydrodistention this time, just a look in his office with me awake. I ask him what he will be looking for and he said cancer. Guess I bette be hoping for kidney stones. I will keep you posted.

Love you all and pray for you,
Rowena

If you are nervouse or have pain in the vulvar or urethra make sure you get a valium or something for pain before they do the in office scope. I had a lot of pain in the vulva and they could not even get the lidocane on without making me cry (so they did not do mine in the office afterall). I hope you get an answer soon- I hated notknowing what was wrong, thought i was going crazy.

I just had an IVP Thurs. I was scared to death. But it was nothing to worry about. But my instructions b4 my IVP was simple. Nothing to eat after midnight. Different places must have different instructions.
All i did was lay on a x-ray bed. they inserted an IV in my arm and injected the dye. I felt warm all over, and had a metal taste in my mouth. They took a series of x-rays while i layed there. When i felt like i had to urinate they let me get up and go, and then i layed back down and had more x-rays. I almost fell asleep. lol It wasn't bad at all!

I really hope they find something to explain the blood, but I hope you don't have cancer. I'll pray for you. Chelsey

Thanks,
I can use all the prayer I can get. I don't think I'm scared anymore, I just don't want to go through the process.
