Introduction:

Explaining IC to family can be challenging. Explaining IC to children is almost impossible. We've written this book for parents with IC who have children between the ages of 5 and 10.

We have several goals that we hope it will achieve:

1. We hope that it will explain IC in simple terms. IC is a big word!

2. We want it to be humorous and a source of funny stories between parent and child.

3. We hope to minimize any fears that your child may have about doctors, your doctor visits and your long term health.

4. We want to reinforce safety with medication.

5. Most importantly, we hope that it gives some practical daily tips for you and your children.

This book explains why mom (or dad) might not be able to go outside or drive to a ball game. It gives children an idea of what they can do to help. Remember .... with time, humor and a willingness to talk and listen to each other, both the patient and their families can make it through this confusing time. Good luck and God bless! - Jill Osborne

I read ICN Guide for Children with my son, who is 8 and he loved it. He loved the illustrations too. I think he understood how I felt before, but now I am sure. It was wonderful. Thanks for all your great work!!

I LOVED IT!!! What a great book!!! I recently wrote my first children's book and I am planning on self-publishing it, have been thinking of doing a second one about general health problems for kids, and this was a great example! Well Done!
- Rebecca, fellow IC patient & mom of 5yr old (06/05)

I just read your booklet for children with a mother that has IC. I thought it was great.  Sometimes children don't understand why you can't do things sometimes.  Thank you for coming up with something that children can understand.  It's very hard having this condition because all the children see is Mommy either on the toilet or in her bed.  This booklet really explains everything to them.  Sometimes my children will come to me and say "mom will you ever be better".  That is a real hard question to answer.  I usually say that I am working with great doctor's and they are really helping mommy.  Thank you again for making this booklet for children.

Thanks for the coloring book for kids! I have not been the best at describing the problem to my daughter….or my husband for that matter! - Lynn (May 2005)

Dedicated to the memory of Marge "Truzz" Truzzolino, a much beloved elementary school teacher in Santa Rosa California and who helped to develop some of the concepts of this book.
