Chat Rooms

The Interstitial Cystitis Network offers several chat rooms for your use. Our rooms are available via MIRC and/or Java driven chat rooms.

.ICN Chat Central (Room: #icchat) - Just click this link to enter our main chat room. This room hosts are weekly support group meetings and guest presentations. It is also open 24 hours a day for patients to gather.

.ICN Chat Central (Webmaster Back Up) - This is our back up room on another server if our primary server is down. If our regular chat room server is down, we will meet in our alternate room on Webmaster.

IRC Users:
Primary Room - irc.icssinfo.com
Back Up Room - irc.webmaster.com

Each room uses port: 7000, group: icchat.
The command to enter the room is: /join #icchat.

If you are unable to enter a room and receive a message stating that JAVA is not supported by your web browser, you'll want to download a new free version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Free evaluation versions are available!

Newbie Chats: Mondays 6PM PST, 9PM EST.
Guided Support Chats: Tuesdays 6PM PST
Drop In Chat: Any other evenings. Not moderated
MIRC Software:
Microsoft Chat - which offers some animation for chat participants using the same software.

Chat Tips

Participating in a chat for the first time can be enlightening, overwhelming and, in some cases, down right confusing. Just imagine 25 people talking at once, and that's what an informal chat is like. Our formal chats, however, are moderated and will be strongly guided. As you enter, however, please take some time to learn some of the basic commands that will make your stay easier and more satisfying.

Be Positive & Make Friends
The Golden Rule for On-Line Support Chats: The more positive and encouraging you are, the more friends you will make. Always, always leave a negative attitude out there.

To Join the Chat - /join:
If you enter a server and are not dropped into the #icchat room, you can enter that room by typing: /join #icchat.

Changing Your Name - /nick: Most users enter the room as a Guest. However, it makes it very difficult to talk when we have ten or more guests in the room. We encourage you to use the Nickname command to create an appropriate nickname for you! You can do this by typing: /nick (your chosen name) at the message line.

If the name you have selected is already taken, you will have sixty seconds to change your name to something else. Don't worry if your name is taken! It's pretty normal out there.. so try combining your name, initials and the letters IC .

Private Conversations & Whispering
You can talk privately to people during chats! In fact, we encourage you to do so. In most cases, all you need to do is double click on the name of the person you would like to whisper to until a separate window appears, then type separately to that person. To stop whispering, just close that window. You can whisper with several different people at the same time. (Thank you Lesa!)

Help - /help
If you want help with IRC commands, simply type in /help.

Locating the Meeting Staff:
The facilitators and/or guest speakers for each meeting will be using all capital letters for your convenience. Please do not interrupt the speaker and/or moderator during the announcement and topic discussion. If you come in late, please whisper to an ICN volunteer for info on what's happening.

Know the Meeting Format:
Please pay attention to the meeting schedule for our formal meetings and save your comments and questions for the Q&A period, which will begin after the topic and/or presentation. We will take Q&A for as long as needed, before opening up the room for general discussion.

Safety First:
Practice common sense and safety. NEVER give out your full name, city and phone number to someone in an internet chat who asks for it.
